THE SPY: Release date and trailer for Netflix drama

By  |

Netflix is giving us our first look at The Spy, a six-episode period drama inspired by the real-life story of former Mossad agent, Eli Cohen, who successfully goes undercover in Syria in the early 1960s. Sacha Baron Cohen stars as Eli in a startling turn from his prior broad comedy performances. We’re a long way from Borat and banana hammocks, folks.

The Spy also stars Noah Emmerich as Dan Peleg, Eli’s Mossad handler who tries to ease his own guilt over the sacrifices Eli makes, Hadar Ratzon Rotem as Eli’s wife, Nadia, who is left to raise their family on her own and knows something isn’t right about her husband’s government job, and Waleed Zuaiter as Amin Al-Hafz, a military officer who thinks he’s found the perfect ally in the undercover Cohen.

Netflix has not yet given us the name of Alexander Siddig’s character, but you’ll spot him (sans beard!) a couple of times in the trailer. Based on his style of dress and the context of the scenes, it appears Sid’s character is also Mossad and possibly undercover. Take a look and see what you think.

The Spy premieres on Netflix Friday, September 6.

Mel started a fan site for Siddig in 1996, as a way to learn HTML and to promote his charitable endeavors. In 1998, he proposed that it become his official fan site; she quickly agreed and a long-distance friendship was born. You can reach Mel at mel[at]sidcity[dot]net.
