We are embarking on an ambitious endeavor: a collaborative art project that spans the globe!
Inspired by other collaborative art projects, Siddig suggested that the Sid City Social Club undertake something similar. After some discussion, we’ve come up with the idea of shipping multiple pieces of white Aida fabric to artists in different regions. Each artist will add to the larger piece, creating a collaborative artwork on the theme: What does love mean to you?
The plan is to assemble the various pieces of fabric and exhibit them both online and in-person.
Content:
Interpret the theme – What does love mean to you? – artistically using lightweight, malleable media such as pens/markers, beads and sequins, paints, etc. Feel free to build off what other artists have already contributed!
Dimensions:
Your art should be no more than 8 in x 8 in or 20 cm x 20 cm. It can be smaller and does not have to be square, it just needs to fit within those dimensions.
Restrictions:
All art must be original to the artist (no copyrighted content).
All art must be suitable for all ages.
Note: Sid is covering the cost of shipping via FedEx. You will be given an account number to charge when shipping the canvas to the next artist.
Sign Up to Participate
After you’ve read the information above and the FAQ on the right, use the form below to sign up. Make sure you provide your current mailing address!
Receive Confirmation
Within a week of the signup deadline, you will receive a confirmation email with an estimate of when to expect the “canvas” (Aida fabric) to arrive.
If circumstances change and you are no longer able to commit to completing your part of the project during the designated timeframe, please let Mel know ASAP.
Receive Canvas
When you receive the canvas, please check in and let us know it has arrived!
Create Art
Time to get creative! You will have 14 days to complete your contribution to the project. If you realize you need longer, please let Mel know ASAP so we can shift the timeline for future artists.
Please take photos and/or video as you work! We would like to compile a mini documentary to exhibit alongside the completed project.
Send Canvas to the Next Artist
Once you’ve finished your part of the project and allowed it to dry/cure/set, it’s time to send the canvas on to the next artist.
We will provide the mailing address for the next artist and a FedEx account number for you to use. Sid is covering shipping costs for this project.
Once you’ve mailed the canvas, please let Mel know and send over any photos/videos you took of the creation process.
How big can my artwork be?
Your art should be no more than 8 in x 8 in or 20 cm x 20 cm. It can be smaller and does not have to be square, it just needs to fit within those dimensions.
What media is acceptable?
Because this artwork is meant to hang vertically and will need to be rolled to ship from person to person, we recommend lightweight, malleable media such as drawing with pens/markers, embroidery thread/yarn/string, applique of lightweight fabrics, beads and sequins (securely fastened), and/or paints that can be rolled without cracking or transferring.
What media is NOT acceptable?
Don’t use media that’s heavy or sharp which might rip or snag the fabric or other parts of the artwork. Don’t use pastels, pencils, or other media that might rub off/transfer when the fabric is rolled.
What is Aida fabric?
Aida is a type of evenweave fabric commonly used for cross stitch. We are using a tight weave (18 count) that should accommodate a variety of art techniques and media.
Can I create something on a different piece of fabric and attach it?
Yes! You can create your artwork on a separate piece of fabric that can be appliqued to the larger piece. Please keep in mind that this artwork will hang vertically and needs to be rolled up for shipping.
How long do I have to complete my part of the project?
You’ll need to send the package on to the next person within 14 days of receiving it.
What if I can’t finish my artwork within 14 days?
We will be opening signups periodically throughout the year to accommodate schedules; you may want to wait until you have more time to work on your piece. Another option is to create your art on a separate piece of fabric that can be appliqued to the larger project so you can work on it before the project is shipped to you.
How do I ship the canvas to the next person?
After you’ve let us know you received the canvas, you will receive an email with the name and mailing address of the person you will pass the canvas to along with the FedEx account number to charge.
What if I’m interested in participating but not ready to commit?
No problem! We will be opening signups periodically throughout the year. If you decide later that you would like to participate, just wait for the next signup period.
