Trekkies have a new leader
'Star' treatment for J.J.

By DAVE MCNARY

J.J. Abrams is becoming the next Gene Roddenberry. Paramount is breathing life into its "Star Trek" franchise by setting "Mission: Impossible III" helmer J.J. Abrams to produce and direct the 11th "Trek" feature, aiming for a 2008 release.

Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, Abrams' producing team from "Lost," also will produce the yet-to-be-titled feature.

Project, to be penned by Abrams and "MI3" scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, will center on the early days of seminal "Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission.

Deal reflects Par's bullishness on "MI3," which launches worldwide next weekend, and underlines the goal of Paramount chief Brad Grey and prexy Gail Berman to re-energize the pipeline via high-profile tentpoles while revitalizing the Par brand with top-tier talent such as Abrams.

"MI3" is the first pic to be released that's been greenlit by Grey.

"Star Trek" has been Hollywood's most durable performer other than James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series.

Decision to relaunch "Star Trek" comes less than a year after UPN pulled the plug on "Star Trek: Enterprise" amid dismal ratings following a four-season run and four years after "Star Trek: Nemesis" turned in the worst performance of the 10 films with $43 million domestic.

Original series created by Roddenberry launched in 1966 on NBC and ended in 1969.

During the following decade, the original 78 episodes of "Trek" became staples in syndication and helped mobilize the fan base along with conventions, books and merchandise. Paramount released "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979 and saw domestic grosses hit $82 million. The next three films grossed a combined $263 million domestically, so Paramount started the second TV series, "The Next Generation," in 1987, with Rick Berman and Roddenberry co-exec producing.

Under Sherry Lansing's tenure, Rick Berman had been teamed several years ago with Jordan Kerner and Kerry McCluggage to develop an 11th feature set in the early days of Starfleet Academy.

This is FABULOUS news! JJ and his team are geniuses who tell compelling stories with excellent dialogue and in ways that are new and exciting. I am thrilled that they're taking on the project.

I'm happy for the choice: I love JJ Abrams.... but I'm not happy for the plot: It seems to be Dawson's trek.......
I love star trek since years... too much time to enjoy that plot!

I agree with this, but it may not be too bad. I just wonder, will they ever try to do a DS9 movie? Now that was a great cast and they should seriously think about it. It's the next logical choice. Isn't it?

Just remember WHO is telling the story and the quality of work that team has produced in the past. The only reason I was going to watch 'Lost' was because it was JJ's and Dominic Monaghan was in it, not because of the plot which sounded outlandish. I was crossing my fingers that it would last an entire season, just for Dom's sake. Oh me of little faith. lol.gif

Um, I loved Nemesis. unsure.gif It was one of my favorite ST movies. I will maintain a 'wait-and-see' attitude over this new project. It sounds a bit redundant to me. However, I am a Trek fan from way back, so I'll keep an open mind. That's the most I can say right now.

Beyond all the rumors already making the rounds about ST 90210 and such, I'm puzzled by the apparent need for characters to have known each other almost since infancy (exaggeration intended). Why not leave Kirk and Spock as having met when Kirk took over from Pike? Why insist that they knew each and served together from the Academy forward?

Just doesn't feel right to me.

Oh, well, just MHO.

And it doesn't seem to be right if you've watched the original series.
Didn't they want to make some starfleet acadamy film at the beginning of the 90s?
I just wish they would give Star Trek a break for a while.

I heard that, too. I don´t know if that starfleet acadamy film was an rumor or if it was really planed.
But a academy film doesn´t sound much interesting for me. hmmm.gif

Star Trek Back in 2008

If you understand the phrase "like Spock rising from the dead on the Genesis planet," read on...

After a three year break, Star Trek will return in 2008 with a new film directed by J.J. Abrams, and written by his same team that cranked out Mission: Impossible III. I would be thrilled about this, if it weren't for the fact that I saw a ten minute clip from Mission Impossible III at Wondercon in San Francisco. I'm not exaggerating here when I saw that nearly the entire clip was one long string of crashes, gunfire and explosions, none of it particularly interesting. It felt like a ten minute parody of an action movie, which I'm almost sure was not the intention of the creative team. At the end, I was left wondering why they didn't show us the little things -- things like plot, character development, etc... Things that would appeal to anyone over the age of eight.

Don't get me wrong, I love action as much as the next red-blooded Star Wars-raised American male. Deep Space Nine was my favorite Trek, and it also happened to be the most action-packed, devoting its last few seasons to a major interstellar war that almost destroyed the Federation. But if I were to go through and pick any 30-second battle sequence from DS9, I'm absolutely certain it would demonstrate more heart, innovation and story than that 10 minute explosion they showed us from Mission Impossible.

On the other hand, Abrams is responsible for two of the best TV shows (supposedly -- I haven't watched either) in recent years: Alias and Lost. Hopefully he'll forego the emptiness of that MI:III trailer and stick to the intrigue and mystery that have made those shows work.

Seems that the character dynamics would have been different between Kirk and Spock in TOS if they had been friends back to the Academy.

We saw how Kirk related to old friends -- Gary Mitchell as an example. Seeing how Kirk and Spock's relationship progressed through the series and the movies, it doesn't seem like their friendship could have stretched back 15 years before TOS.

Still MHO.
