The directors cut has much more on almost everyone. The movie was good originally though as was said earlier, there were pieces missing that left you wondering. The directors cut allows you to identify more with the characters, and because of this, the message the movie carries is delivered more effectively. Whether the world was ready to hear that message at the time is another story, but I'm not going there right now. On a light note, my Persian cat loves this movie. He apparently has excellent taste in actors.

I was flipping through channels earlier and KOH was on. I hadn't watched it in a long time and arrived just in time for the battle outside Kerak. This was my introduction to Sid, and I'd forgotten how really good he was in this movie.

I have just listened to the Directors Commentary of the movie with added contributions from Ridley Scott, Orlando Bloom and writer William Monahan. Very Insightful although some of the technobabble (especially about lighting the tent scenes) went right over my head.


Also got to say I much prefer the extended version. It seems a much more cohesive story in the longer cut.

I watched "Kingdom of Heaven". Wow! Wow! Wow! Great movie.
I think it was the chopped--up version, not the director's cut, but it was still great.
Everyone but me probably saw this movie a long time ago, still I suppose I should use the spoiler tags, just to be on the safe side.

Sid has a terrific part in "Kingdom of Heaven". I think it would be fair to call it a co--starring role, even if he doesn't get that kind of credit. His character sort of acts like a bridge between the two sides. He's Saladin's most trusted subordinate, and he also connects with Balian (excuse me if I spell the names wrong). Although there's no getting around the fact that they're in opposing armies, Sid's character--is his name Nasir? I'm not sure but I think I've read that his name is Nasir. Anyway I'm calling him that here. Tell me if I'm wrong. There is no personal animosity between Nasir and Balian. It's obvious that they like and respect each other, and could probably become close friends if circumstances allowed. I like the scene where Nasir is lying flat on his back in the sand, calmly waiting for Balian to cut his head off. He's completely fearless. Or at least he doesn't show any fear. Sid plays Nasir as a character of easy aristocratic grace. He's a noble warrior, with a code of honor rivaling Worf's, but he also has a merciful heart, a kind nature and an air of gentle amusement. In the scene when Nasir and Balian are talking about which of them is going to take ownership of a horse, Nasir, I think, is quite endearing.

Orlando Bloom's character is impressive, too. He goes from being a despairing blacksmith to being this amazing courageous leader. He gives some awesome speeches. He is very concerned about the state of his soul and wants to be a perfect chivalrous knight. Funny, he seems to have no moral qualms about committing adultery with the King's sister. Oh well. She was married to a really rotten guy named Guy, a major villain who ends up killed. Balian and the lady walk off hand-in-hand near the end of the movie and I suppose he eventually makes an honest woman of her.

There's a lot more to this movie--Liam Neeson's character, for example, is fabulous. But I guess I've given away enough of the plot. "Kingdom of Heaven" is the kind of movie I think I can watch repeatedly and not get tired of (especially because Sid is so good in it). So I think I would like to get the DVD.

If you like the movie, by all means pick up the DVD. First you can purchase the uncut version giving a much better story without the haphazard editing that damaged the original. Second, you will now be plagued with commercials as it has made it to regular stations. Not only are they capable of turning a 2 hour movie into 3 hours, but they have been known to do some of their own editing.

One thing I found long ago that surprised me is just how much editing some of these channels can do. One day I was watching Lord of the Rings. I have no idea why as I own the trilogy, but here I was watching it. I have no recollection of what channel this was but when they got to Lothlorian Woods, the whole scene was different, not edited, different. I know that movie from front to back and was shocked. I had my daughter watch it to confirm I wasn't nuts.

So, again, if you like a movie and feel you might want to watch it several times, buy it.

The movie where I first noticed bad editing was The Big Chill. They'd leave in the set-up for a joke, but then cut the joke because it was a little risque. If the joke isn't going to be used, the set-up just hangs there not making any sense.

When I watched Kingdom of Heaven on TV the other night, it was three hours long. It made me wonder at first if it was the Director's Cut or not, for surely the edited version wouldn't be three hours. Then I realized it was just padded out with lots and lots of commercials. Reading what y'all have posted here in the forums, it's clear that I missed out on quite a bit by not seeing the full-length movie. I want to see the Director's Cut of Kingdom of Heaven. But you know, there are some scenes--like when you talk about an upsetting scene with Sibylla and her son--that maybe I'd rather not watch. When they cut out foul language and scenes that are really graphic or gruesome, editing can sometimes be an improvement.

Actually the additional scenes with Sybilla are adding a lot to her character. In the normal version I was sometimes wondering why she is in the film at all. As for gruesome scenes: There was a lot of blood in the theatrical version. If I'm not mistaken there isn't much more blood in the director's cut. The director's just adds a lot to the devellopement of the characters throughout the film.
Try it. You are going to love it. Promised.

I can recommend the longer version of the movie whole heartedly. Also on the special two disc version I thoroughly enjoyed the Director's commentary with Sir Ridley, William Monahan (the writer) and Orlando Bloom all giving a real insite into the making of the movie including the scenes which were cut from the theatrical release. (unfortunately no Siddig)

In my addition of the directors cut, Sid was interviewed several times, he had some funny tales to tell, like the time the fans of Orlando Bloom thought Sid was Orlando, from the back until Sid turned around, the way he told it was amusing! The one I have is a four disc verion " a special extended dvd version" it does have the added scenes as well.

Ok I must have had some kind of brain freeze but I have spent a few hours going through the 4 disk extended directors cut with all the bells and whistles on it and on disks 3 and 4 there is loads of Siddig snippets which are both insightful and at times very amusing. In short Sid being Sid.

I would love to know how many actual takes the Raymond execution scene needed in the end and I love how Sid described his time on set.

I was also moved by one of his quotes in the interviews, again showing his innate ability to make you think.

Sorry for the confusion everyone and I sincerely recommend the 4 disc version as a present to yourselves over the coming weeks.
