A lovely young woman knocked on my door last night. She was educating voters about the two initiatives on the ballot. I knew about the one forbidding marriage equality, but couldn't name the other. It's voter suppression. As an election judge, I should have known that.
Anyway, we got to talking and I learned she was from Sudan. "We're free now," she said. "Did you know?" I assured her I'd followed Sudan news regularly. I mentioned that Alexander Siddig had been born there and that George Clooney had been arrested in front of their embassy. Her sister had been at the embassy at that time and had actually seen that happen! As she left, she told me this was her second day of door-knocking and she'd been very discouraged and wondered if she should quit. Now she was reenergized and ready to continue. I was pleased I was able to do that for her. Door knocking is not a fun job. I've done it. Sometimes just one interested, engaged citizen can make your day. I was glad I could do that for her.
